{"id":31561,"date":"2025-12-15T11:57:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T11:57:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goodhomesmagazine.com\/?p=31561"},"modified":"2025-12-17T09:24:20","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T09:24:20","slug":"christmas-tree-syndrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goodhomesmagazine.com\/inspiration\/christmas-tree-syndrome\/","title":{"rendered":"Why your Christmas tree might be making you ill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At this time of year our homes are full of festive decorations &#8211; not just Christmas trees but plants such as mistletoe and poinsettias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, these delicate decorations could be having an impact on your health, and not for the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Christmas trees and festive plants will no doubt bring festive cheer to your home, they could also bring a trigger of allergy-style symptoms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often mistaken for a stubborn winter cold, these reactions could be caused by your festive greenery. <\/p><div class=\"goodh-content\" id=\"goodh-1259215949\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;margin-bottom: 20px;\"><div class=\"goodh-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><!--noptimize--><figure class=\"wp-block-grvmedia-grv-video GRVVideoPrimis\">\r\n\t<div class=\"GRVVideo-wrapper\"><\/div>\r\n<\/figure><!--\/noptimize--><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-christmas-tree-syndrome\">What is Christmas Tree Syndrome?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the term used to describe an allergic reaction triggered by exposure to real Christmas trees, or similar plants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can cause symptoms which are commonly associated with colds or hay fever including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A stuffy or blocked nose<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coughing, sneezing or wheezing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sinus pressure or congestion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Headaches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fatigue or feeling run down<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-does-christmas-tree-syndrome-occur\">Why does Christmas Tree Syndrome occur?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The condition happens because real Christmas trees and similar plants naturally release terpenes (aromatic chemicals responsible for their distinctive festive smell). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a tree is brought into a warm indoor environment, these compounds are released more intensely into the air. <\/p><div class=\"goodh-content_2\" id=\"goodh-4071357245\"><div class=\"goodh-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><!--noptimize--><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper mobile\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline mobile\" data-ad-type=\"primary-mpu\" data-ad-label=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizemapping=\"primary-mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250],[300,600],[320,480]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><!--\/noptimize--><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This can irritate the airways in sensitive individuals and trigger symptoms similar to those caused by seasonal allergies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having direct contact with the tree could also irritate the skin, particularly in people who already have allergies or conditions including asthma, eczema or hay fever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Tina Ghela, practising GP and Medichecks Digital Clinician explains: \u201cWhen real Christmas trees are brought indoors, terpenes are released in much higher concentrations than they would be outdoors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This can irritate the airways, eyes and skin, especially in people who already have asthma or allergies.\u201d <\/p><div class=\"goodh-prop-primary-mpu\" id=\"goodh-4288639801\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;margin-bottom: 20px;margin-right: 0px;display: block;clear: both;width: 300px;\"><div class=\"goodh-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><!--noptimize--><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper\">\r\n\t<div class=\"GRVAd inline\" data-ad-type=\"primary-mpu\" data-ad-label=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizemapping=\"primary-mpu\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div>\r\n<\/div><!--\/noptimize--><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These symptoms often closely mimic a cold or flu, but in reality, it\u2019s not an infection at all. It&#8217;s your immune system reacting to airborne particles released by the tree.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-it-just-christmas-trees-that-cause-this\">Is it just Christmas trees that cause this?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Christmas trees aren&#8217;t the only festive culprits for causing this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other seasonal plants including mistletoe, holly and poinsettias can contribute to allergy symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These plants may carry pollen and mould spores on their leaves and in their soil. <\/p><div class=\"goodh-prop-in-content-mpu_2\" id=\"goodh-1603353525\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;margin-bottom: 20px;margin-right: 0px;display: block;clear: both;width: 300px;\"><div class=\"goodh-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><!--noptimize--><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper mobile\">\r\n\t<div class=\"GRVAd inline mobile\" data-ad-type=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div>\r\n<\/div><!--\/noptimize--><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When kept in warm, enclosed spaces, these allergens can circulate through the air, creating a little indoor version of hay fever season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For people with hay fever, mould allergies, asthma or eczema, this can trigger familiar symptoms such as sneezing, blocked sinuses, watery eyes and breathing difficulties.&#8221; adds Dr Ghela. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-it-safer-to-get-an-artificial-tree\">Is it safer to get an artificial tree?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Switching to an artificial Christmas tree can help some people to manage their symptoms, but its not always a perfect solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Artificial trees that have been stored away for months can gather dust and mould, which can also trigger allergic reactions when they&#8217;re brought back out and set up indoors. <\/p><div class=\"goodh-prop-in-content-mpu\" id=\"goodh-449913590\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;margin-bottom: 20px;margin-right: 0px;display: block;clear: both;width: 300px;\"><div class=\"goodh-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><!--noptimize--><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper mobile\">\r\n\t<div class=\"GRVAd inline mobile\" data-ad-type=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div>\r\n<\/div><!--\/noptimize--><\/div><div class=\"goodh-prop-in-content-mpu_3\" id=\"goodh-4155570507\"><div class=\"goodh-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><!--noptimize--><figure class=\"wp-block-grvmedia-grv-video GRVVideoPrimis\">\r\n\t<div class=\"GRVVideo-wrapper\"><\/div>\r\n<\/figure><!--\/noptimize--><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-can-i-avoid-christmas-tree-syndrome-then\">How can I avoid Christmas Tree Syndrome then?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to reduce your risk of Christmas tree syndrome, there are some simple steps you can take to minimise your risk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Store your decorations in airtight containers or bags to prevent dust and mould building up over the year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gently wash or vacuum artificial trees before decorating to remove dust and allergens. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If choosing a real tree, spray it down outdoors with a garden hose before bringing it inside, to remove surface mould spores.
