\u201cComforting and nostalgic, there\u2019s nothing better than curling up to watch your favourite rom-com at this time of year, so it\u2019s hardly surprising we want to recreate the iconic aesthetic at home and turn our spaces into charming, characterful spaces that evoke those same feelings.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defined by understated patterns<\/a>, a playful colour scheme and vintage details, Ally says rom-com interiors offer the perfect balance of comfort and elegance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the best ways to bring the essence of rom-com decor into your home is simply by making it uniquely yours.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA key element of a true rom-com interior is personality, often demonstrated by decorative pieces and trinkets scattered throughout the space,\u201d explains Magdalena Gierasinska, head of product and displays at\u00a0Barker and Stonehouse<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLarger objects, such as vases and bowls, make for excellent dining room centrepieces to showcase your specific tastes, whilst smaller objects can help fill out mantlepieces, bedside and coffee tables, and dressers.\u201d<\/p>

Layering is essential to nailing the rom-com aesthetic to give a space that warm, lived-in feel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think patterned cushions on worn-in sofas, throws slung over armchairs, stacked books, vintage lamps, and art casually leaning on shelves. <\/p>

Ambient lighting is a rom-com interiors essential, basically because it\u2019s what gives a room that soft, cinematic glow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swap the harsh big light for warm table lamps, fairy lights, and candles to create a cosy, flattering atmosphere that feels straight out of a movie scene. It\u2019s all about curating lighting you’ll want to linger in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe homes in our favourite rom-coms always have a warm and fuzzy effect,\u201d explains Ally.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe key to achieving this in your own home is through a layered lighting scheme with lots of ambient lighting.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She suggests focussing on building layers of light into your space, from incorporating low-level sources of light such as lamps and candles to floor lamps and overhead pendant lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo create a relaxed styling approach in a bedroom or living room, I love placing lamps directly on the floor,\u201d she continues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDoing this brings a lived-in feel to the space that\u2019s instantly calming. Scatter several lamps across your floor in different shapes and sizes to achieve a beautiful glow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a general rule in your living space, wherever you have seating options, Ally recommends ensuring you have lamps surrounding them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t forget to add smaller light sources at different heights and levels too,\u201d she adds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese can be placed directly on the ground, such as near fireplaces and on side tables, to create a layered effect.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Achieving a rom-com look in your home involves the delicate balancing of contrasting factors that, if done correctly, can give your interiors that true cinematic feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the core aspects is making your home look and feel lived-in, without making it feel untidy and unorganised,\u201d explains Magdalena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLayering textures is a great way to achieve this, incorporating materials such as metals, wood, and glass into your spaces to give them as much depth as possible, along with soft furnishings like cushions and plush throws decorating you sofas and chairs to keep things cosy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greenery can also be used to great effect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Master the art of the unmade bed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mastering the art of the unmade bed is a subtle but essential detail in rom-com interiors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A perfectly imperfect touch that makes a bedroom feel relaxed and real. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think gently crumpled linen sheets, layered throws, and casually plumped pillows that look effortlessly inviting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s all about embracing comfort over perfection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe unmade bed look is something you\u2019ll see across the majority of rom-com interiors, making any bed exude cosiness and warmth,\u201d explains Magdalena. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLayer blankets at the bottom of the bed, almost throwing them on rather than carefully placing them, with oversized blankets adding to the aesthetic even further.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Magdalena suggests placing cushions against the headboard at an angle, avoiding straightening them up and instead letting them rest however they fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhilst you want things to remain mostly cohesive, don\u2019t be afraid to mix up the textures, shapes, and sizes of your soft furnishings, adding a small element of chaos to complete the look,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mix and match your patterns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rom-com interiors are all about character, and mixing and matching patterns is a great way to introduce it into your home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStart by deciding on a colour palette, such as warm natural tones or pastels, and use that as a base to help pick your patterns,\u201d advises Magdalena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy sticking to a theme, even clashing patterns can be harmonious, so you can pick those you\u2019re drawn to most without fear of them not meshing together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Magdalena says it can also be a good idea to choose a main pattern for the room and then select others that complement it, such as smaller, similar versions of that pattern, or ones that follow the same theme, such as floral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf the pattern mixing is making the space feel too overwhelming, mix in some plain, solid colours that help to balance things out,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
