With warm weather, often comes thunderstorms in the UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, with a few on the way, we are wondering how we can protect our newly summer-proofed gardens from the bad weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you haven\u2019t already taken steps to protect your garden during storms<\/a>, now is the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Storms could hit any area of the country, leading to flying debris and waterlogged gardens. <\/p>

These measures will help protect your garden during storms and worsening weather conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, Samantha Richards from Gazeboshop<\/a> shares her tips to prevent damage, from lawn care to securing fences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anchor outdoor structures <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Flying trampolines, washing lines and bins are not uncommon during a storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAny loose objects in your garden can simply be swept away if a gust of wind is strong enough, which is why it’s vital for anything that isn\u2019t fixed in place to be weighed down,\u201d Richards advises.<\/p>

\u201cThis also includes sheds and greenhouses as they can become a serious hazard to property and people if parts of the material are blown away.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pack away outdoor furniture <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pack away any outdoor garden furniture or gazebos in a secure shed or garage for the thunderstorm period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any hanging baskets or delicate garden ornaments should also be stored safely inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garden storm protection: Secure fences\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Loose fence panels can get uprooted in a storm. <\/p>

Any panels that are leaning or bowed are in a vulnerable position duringstormy weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf your fences aren\u2019t looking very stable, it\u2019s worth adding in some extra support to ensure they don\u2019t come loose and fall down,\u201d Richards says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs a short-term fix, you can bolt another post against the loose fence to increase its stability. However, if there\u2019s serious damage then you should consider replacing the fence entirely.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protect plants <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Investing in some burlap or tying cloth over any delicate blooms will help guard them against stormy weather conditions. <\/p>

\u201cIf you don\u2019t want to take any chances, bringing your potted plants indoors – whether that\u2019s inside your greenhouse or porch – over the coming days will ensure they survive the storm,\u201d Richards adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those plants you can\u2019t bring indoors, pruning before a storm hits will ensure there are no loose branches to snap off in heavy winds.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garden storm protection: Check drainage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Heavy rainfall brings a higher chance of flooding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t great for the health of your lawn and can lead to rotting if excess water is left to sit for extended periods of time.<\/p>

To reduce the risk of flooding, make sure all your drainage systems are clear and working properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Check and clear any debris from gutters, and aerate your lawn by spiking holes in the soil with a garden fork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspect trees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There have been plenty of examples of trees falling and smashing into houses during recent storms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahead of a big storm, inspect the trees surrounding your property to identify any possible danger trees and prevent damage. Look out for dead branches, splits in wood and roots rising up out of the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you are surrounded by trees and are especially worried about one falling, then consider getting in touch with a tree surgeon to get a professional opinion,\u201d Richards adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep off the grass<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you have a waterlogged lawn, keep off your grass as much as possible, and give it the opportunity to drain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walking over a lawn that\u2019s waterlogged will force the air out of the soil and when this eventually dries, it will be heavily packed together which can lead to stunted growth in spring,\u201d Richards warns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Damaging soil and grass blades can also lead to fungal lawn diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
