Insulation is anything designed to slow the loss of heat from your house. The minimum thermal efficiency (U-value) of the replacements is prescribed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/conservation-of-fuel-and-power-approved-document-l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the latest version of building regs<\/a>, which aim to ensure all property renovations improve the energy efficiency of buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"widgetopts861049854 extendedwopts-col col-md-12 col-sm-12 col-xs-12 wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-getting-advice\"  data-animation-event=\"enters\" >Getting advice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"widgetopts303893772 extendedwopts-col col-md-12 col-sm-12 col-xs-12 \"  data-animation-event=\"enters\" >As you can see, insulating a Victorian house is neither simple nor cheap. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"widgetopts1754943891 extendedwopts-col col-md-12 col-sm-12 col-xs-12 \"  data-animation-event=\"enters\" >But it is a project you may well want to tackle nonetheless, spurred on by the subsequent cost-saving and climate-related benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"widgetopts1022857151 extendedwopts-col col-md-12 col-sm-12 col-xs-12 \"  data-animation-event=\"enters\" >When talking to professionals, bear in mind that insulation salespeople have a financial incentive to sell their product. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"widgetopts2041182248 extendedwopts-col col-md-12 col-sm-12 col-xs-12 \"  data-animation-event=\"enters\" >And general builders don\u2019t necessarily have particular training with what are new materials and techniques.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"widgetopts1123130813 extendedwopts-col col-md-12 col-sm-12 col-xs-12 \"  data-animation-event=\"enters\" >The British Standards Institute has written a set of standards \u2013 a code of practice \u2013 setting out best practice when it comes to retrofitting energy-efficiency measures into houses.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"widgetopts120478089 extendedwopts-col col-md-12 col-sm-12 col-xs-12 \"  data-animation-event=\"enters\" >This is called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsigroup.com\/en-GB\/standards\/pas-2035-2030\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">PAS 2035<\/a>, and it sets out a quality standard for retrofit and energy-efficiency work on domestic housing, including insulation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"widgetopts1589608047 extendedwopts-col col-md-12 col-sm-12 col-xs-12 \"  data-animation-event=\"enters\" >You should look out for an installer who can work to this standard.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"widgetopts1031529089 extendedwopts-col col-md-12 col-sm-12 col-xs-12 wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-retrofit-assessment\"  data-animation-event=\"enters\" >Retrofit assessment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"widgetopts36089882 extendedwopts-col col-md-12 col-sm-12 col-xs-12 \"  data-animation-event=\"enters\" >A good way to work out what would be best for your house is to start with a comprehensive energy audit or retrofit assessment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"widgetopts51302358 extendedwopts-col col-md-12 col-sm-12 col-xs-12 \"  data-animation-event=\"enters\" >If you can find one locally, one of the new specialists called retrofit assessors would be a good person to assess your house and advise on what to fit to improve your energy efficiency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"widgetopts343042504 extendedwopts-col col-md-12 col-sm-12 col-xs-12 \"  data-animation-event=\"enters\" >You can find trained retrofit assessors listed on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trustmark.org.uk\/homeowner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Trust Mark website<\/a>. Or you could try the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elmhurstenergy.co.uk\/find-an-assessor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">website of Elmhurst Energy<\/a>, a private company that trains assessors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"widgetopts2045608062 extendedwopts-col col-md-12 col-sm-12 col-xs-12 \"  data-animation-event=\"enters\" >As yet, there aren\u2019t many of them about. But it is hoped that, going forward, more people will train as both retrofit assessors, and the retrofit coordinators who can project manage retrofit work.
