If so, which sections need cleaning, how often, and how can you prevent dirt accumulating?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 393 million views and counting, videos of \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/discover\/hidden-washing-machine-compartments\">hidden washing machine compartments<\/a>\u2019 are proving a hit on TikTok. Surprisingly, one in five Brits never clean their washing machine \u2013 this is often a result of a lack in education and awareness, with people not knowing how,\u201d says Vivien Fodor, Laundry Category Manager at Hotpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhilst it may seem counterintuitive, cleaning your washing machine is key to avoiding bacteria build up and growth.\u201d<\/p><div class=\"goodh-content_2\" id=\"goodh-1532073776\"><div class=\"goodh-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><!--noptimize--><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper mobile\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline mobile\" data-ad-type=\"primary-mpu\" data-ad-label=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizemapping=\"primary-mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250],[300,600],[320,480]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><!--\/noptimize--><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The average washing machine has three areas that need maintenance, and they\u2019re all specifically designed to be accessible so they can be cleaned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-filter\">The filter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Often located in the corner of the washing machine below the door, the filter is designed to remove debris from laundry by capturing it directly from the wash water. To avoid it spilling on the floor during a clean, place a tray underneath before opening.
