Like it or loathe it, winter is here and it’s time to layer up, scatter around some throws and create a cosy home \u2013 especially with energy bills heading through the roof<\/a>. From the living room to the bedrooms, Good Homes shares some tried-and-tested methods to up the cosiness levels at home without cranking up the heating\u2026<\/p>\n

1. Comforting colours<\/h2>\n

The colour of a room can have a huge impact on our mindset, so try to opt for something warm that gives you feelings of safety. While neutral tones are popular because they’re easy to work with, a bit of colour, even if it’s just a feature wall, offers a depth and richness that can help evoke calm.<\/p>\n

‘The more opulent the shade, the more of a cocoon-effect it will create for you,’ says Lucy Ackroyd, head designer at household linen specialists Christy<\/a>. ‘Terracotta<\/a> can bring depth, and paired with a biscuit, stone or soft pink will bring comfort to your home.’<\/p>\n

If you’re not in the mood for painting, bring these tones in with accessories. Whether it’s new bed linen, artwork or ceramics, it can all make a big difference to how we feel.<\/p>

2. Snug rugs<\/h2>\n

While wooden flooring might be trending, it can leave a space feeling empty and cold. Rather than revamping your home to bring in more carpet, a more practical solution would be to use rugs and mats:\u00a0‘A textured rug, either a deep pile sheepskin or a classic basket weave can work wonders, especially when placed in a strategic spot where extra comfort is needed, such as where you walk in, by the fire, or your favourite reading spot,’ says Lucy.<\/p>\n

3. Throw on a throw<\/h2>\n

One of the easiest ways to make a big difference is by investing in throws<\/a> and blankets for your home. A basket or storage space in your living room is ideal for storing a collection of velvet throws and chunky knit blankets so you, your family and friends can all grab one when settling down for a Netflix binge.<\/p>\n

4. Fleece offering<\/h2>\n

There’s not much point adopting all these cosy home ideas while wandering around in shorts and a t-shirt, so invest in some decent, toasty loungewear: ‘Super soft knitted co-ords are great for daytime, and try to stick to warm, soft colours like beige and cream so you can feel comfy while working from home,’ says Lucy. ‘A fluffy dressing gown is a must for the evening though, and it’s worth investing in a good quality fabric as these can last for years if looked after properly.’<\/p>

6. Hot water bottle<\/h2>\n

It’s an oldie but a goodie \u2013 nothing warms you up on a chilly evening like a hot water bottle. They’re perfect for those who suffer from cold feet, especially when climbing into bed. This will create a warming effect that will naturally bring a sense of calm. Even better, use scented candles so you can enjoy a tranquil scent to further help you relax.<\/p>\n
